PIGEONS, SPARROWS AND SEAGULLS: ONE MORE PROBLEM FOR YOUR COMPANY!
How many times have you found unpleasant surprises from your volatile “neighbors” when entering a company and how many times have you thought: “Enough, we need a solution!”
But the Bird Removal process cannot follow too many DIY solutions as it involves applying protocols that must take into account wildlife laws that must always be taken into serious consideration.
Let’s put it this way, most bird species are welcome in an urban environment and do not cause problems. Some species, however, can thrive on the food supplies provided by human activities and become a pest when their numbers increase. Attracted by food and a safe haven, they roost and nest on buildings in large numbers, causing damage, dirtying the building and surrounding areas, presenting the usual daily unpleasant surprises to your business in fact…
But what are the most common birds that live on the roofs of our companies? And what problems do they create?
The Pigeons
Large numbers of pigeons may congregate on the ledges and roofs of buildings. Their droppings can accumulate and corrode building materials, especially limestone and sandstone. A fungus that grows in the droppings corrodes the stone and makes the surface porous to water which then cracks the stone when it freezes.
House Sparrows
House sparrows often nest inside large buildings where food is stored or processed, such as factories and warehouses. They build large, messy nests of grass and leaves and contaminate surfaces and products with their droppings and nesting material. They may also damage packaged goods by pecking for contents.
The Seagulls
Several species of gulls are pests in coastal cities around the world. They eventually discovered that rooftops were safe, predator-free nesting sites and that urban areas provided many food sources. They can form large, noisy flocks and consume a wide variety of foods found on farms and in urban areas. The main threat to corporate buildings is building nests on rooftops and scavenging for food in restaurants and stores.
Common signs of a bird infestation are:
- Bird Nesting: On Roofs, Overhangs, Cables and Wires
- Bird noises: continuous cries of birds, especially young chicks
- Bird nests: on roofs, overhangs, gutters, roof spaces, rafters
- Nest and feather debris: debris scattered throughout your premises, blocked gutters and drainage systems, damp walls and ceilings due to water infiltration
- Nest and feather debris: debris scattered throughout your premises, blocked gutters and drainage systems, damp walls and ceilings due to water infiltration
- Damaged stock: caused by bird droppings and pecking
How to Control Birds on Your Farm
Wildlife laws protect birds, their nests and eggs. These laws apply not only to the bird pest you want to control, but also to other bird species that may be indirectly affected by the control measures. A licence and a qualified operator are therefore required to implement controls in full compliance with environmental management.
